Showmax is an online subscription video on demand (SVOD) service that debuted in South Africa on August 19, 2015. Showmax employs a localisation approach to compete with existing video on demand competitors, with an emphasis on local content and relationships with mobile telecoms. Showmax has managed to outperform eight domestic competitors in South Africa. It continues to compete with worldwide video streaming providers such as Netflix, Disney+, and Amazon Prime Video.

Showmax is a subsidiary of MultiChoice Group (which is a spin-off of Naspers, which holds a 30.86% interest in Tencent, which operates a comparable service, Tencent Video and iflix).
